RIO Travels to YUMA

RIO Team Travel Trip to Yuma

The RIO Competitive Team left EVO Friday morning, January 27th in route to Yuma.  We were 46 strong with 3 coaches and another 4 swimmers (10 & Unders) joining us in Yuma for our annual team travel meet.

The performances Friday afternoon/evening set the tone for the meet.  Probably the best event of the meet to watch came that evening as Maren Rincon and Karilyn Quon battled literally stroke for stroke in the 1650 Free (66 lengths of the pool).  In the end Maren out stroked Karilyn to the finish but both girls had life time best swims dropping 44+ seconds and 23+ seconds respectfully and narrowly missing the Wisconsin Sectional time standard. GREAT SWIM GIRLS!!!

As usual in Yuma the coaches look at this meet as an opportunity for many of our swimmers to experience swimming some new events – 200 Fly, 500 Free, 1650, 400 IM and 100 Fly (for our 10&UNs). Each meet session ran very quick and it became a challenge for our swimmers to keep getting up and throw down fast swims one after another with very little rest between races. In all we swam 46 new individual events resulting in 46 new best times, many of which resulted in new Age Group Regional qualifying time, Age Group State qualifying times and Senior State qualifying times. Overall in the meet, we had 318 best times in which 25 were new Age Group Regional qualifying times, 30 new Age Group State Q times and 12 new Senior State qualifying times. Bethany Gatlin led the way with 13 best times followed by Ben Hill, Mya White and McKinley Becraft each with 12. James Nicholls achieved 6 new Age Group State Q times followed by Bethany Gatlin with 5. Kalie Allen picked up the most new Age Group Regional times with 5 and Maddie Brown had 3 new ones. On the Senior side Zachary Posniack picked up 3 new Senior State qualifying times and Adam Graunke, Jorden Hart and Halle Wilson were right behind with 2 each.

Ben Hill (9) picked up his very first Age Group State Q time on Saturday in the 100 Fly (first time ever swimming the event) and grabbed a second Q time Sunday in the finals of the 50 Free. Nothing is better then getting your first qualifying time that takes you to a new level in swimming. Melanie Wilson had a unique experience getting to compete in a swim-off for the 1st alternate position in the 50 Free Final. Swimmers can do amazing times in swim-offs because they get so pumped up with only two people racing side by side. The entire RIO Team got behind Melanie’s lane at the turning end to cheer her on. Although Melanie got out touched on the end by a few 100ths, she dropped 1.4 seconds off her best time. By the end of the meet Lauren Halle, was getting ready to swim her 14th race of the meet – the 500 Free. Everyone was feeling the effects of racing hard 10+ races in 2 ½ days but Lauren seemed to find her stride as she ran down a swimmer (about midway through the race) two lanes over and just kept moving while keeping a very solid pace and finished 6+ seconds faster in her 500 Free.

We had the opportunity to celebrate two birthdays at dinner Friday evening – Kate McCreery turned 13 and Vlad Yakobchuk turned 15. The Yuma Fun Factory reopened a few months ago so the 11 & Unders spent Saturday afternoon playing miniature golf and getting wet and for some literally soaked in the bumpers boats. It was a fun way to spend the afternoon away from the pool. The 12 & Overs got their opportunity to enjoy the Fun Factory Saturday evening. The big attraction for our older kids was driving the GO KARTS! Let’s just say there are several kids who we hope don’t start driving too soon!!!!!!

All in all we had another fun and successful trip for our RIO swimmers!
