Hydration: Key to Peak Performance and Health

Water is a fundamental nutrient essential for overall health and athletic performance. Fluids serve two primary purposes: maintaining hydration and providing the body with necessary fuel. Even during Advanced Stroke or Development 1 practices which last only one hour, it is crucial to take sips of water every 15-20 minutes. We recommend that all swimmers bring at least a 16 fl. oz. water bottle for a one-hour practice. Development 2 and High School swimmers may benefit from a larger quantity.
However, bringing a water bottle is only part of the solution. While many swimmers bring water bottles or sports drinks to practice, a significant number leave with their bottles still full. A water bottle is only beneficial if it is used. Swimmers should not wait until they feel thirsty to drink; instead, they should drink periodically to ensure optimal hydration and energy throughout practice.
Equally important is replenishing fluids after practice. Parents can play a vital role in this regard. When picking up your swimmer, have a sports drink or water ready to help them recover after a strenuous practice. This will ensure they start the next day of school and their next practice fully rehydrated and energized.
