Competitive Juniors FAQ
What is the Competitive Junior (CJ) Program?
The CJ Program is part of RIO’s Developmental Team and serves as a bridge between the Development Program and the Rio Competitive Team. It is designed to prepare swimmers for a more competitive environment when they are ready.
Who coaches the CJ Program?
The CJ Program is coached by Coach Melissa Ripley, a 3-time Olympic Gold Medalist with nearly 40 years of coaching experience.
Is joining the CJ Program required?
No. This is an invitation, not an ultimatum. Families may choose to remain in their current Developmental Team program until their swimmer is ready to advance.
How often do swimmers move into the CJ Program?
Swimmers are invited into the CJ Program three times a year: January, April, and August, depending on space availability within each group.
If we can’t join now, can we join later?
Yes. Families can stay on our interest list, and if space is available during the next invite period, families will be contacted.
What if my child will miss a lot of practices (summer travel, vacations, etc.)?
The CJ Program follows a structured curriculum where swimmers progress together. Regularly missing practices can make it difficult to keep up.
How are swimmers grouped?
Groups are determined primarily by age and ability. Final placements are made by Coach Melissa.
What are the CJ groups?
- White Group – Ages 9 and under
- Red Group – Ages 9-11
- Blue Group – Ages 11-14
Exact times and locations are communicated prior to each session start.
Can my child train with a different group?
Due to the structured training regimen, swimmers may not train with other groups unless a special accommodation is approved in advance by Coach Melissa.
How often and how long are practices?
All CJ groups practice 2 times per week for 90 minutes per practice.
Where are practices held during the school year?
School-year practices are typically held at Hamilton Aquatic Center, depending on the season and availability.
What happens to the schedule during the summer?
During the summer, CJ groups transition to morning practices at RIO’s Evo Mesa location (Power & Elliot). Summer schedules are confirmed and communicated once finalized.
Are make-up practices offered if we miss a session?
No. If a swimmer misses a practice due to illness or vacation, the practice is forfeited. Special arrangements may be made directly with Coach Melissa.
Can CJ swimmers attend extra Development practices?
Extra practices outside of the CJ program are not allowed unless approved by Coach Melissa.
What equipment does my child need for CJ practices?
Swimmers need a kickboard and a snorkel. Snorkels are typically introduced later in the training.
Where can we purchase equipment?
Kickboards and snorkels are available for purchase at the EVO office, though families are also welcome to explore other retailers. Swimmers will additionally need a team suit and a team cap.
What type of swimsuit is required?
A regular competitive swimsuit is required. “Recreational” or novelty suits are not recommended.
What is the cost of the CJ Program?
CJ tuition is $203 per month for 2 practices per week, each 90 minutes long.
How does this compare to Development Program tuition?
CJ tuition reflects an increase in both practice frequency and duration compared to Development-level programs.
Is there a trial period?
Yes. Families are offered a 2-week trial period to ensure the program is a good fit.
Do CJ swimmers compete in swim meets?
CJ swimmers do not attend our seasonal development meets, but Coach Melissa hosts private in-house swim meets.
How often are in-house meets held?
Typically, one private meet per month is held at the Evo Mesa location. Events align with what swimmers are currently training.
Does the CJ Program lead to the competitive team?
Yes. The CJ Program is specifically designed to prepare swimmers for eventual transition to RIO’s Competitive Team when they demonstrate readiness in skill, confidence, and commitment.
